Ellen DeGeneres Now: Comedian’s Final Stand-Up Special Arrives on Netflix

Ellen DeGeneres is releasing one last stand-up special before permanently disappearing from the public eye. The comedian’s final special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, premieres today, September 24, on Netflix.

The new special is her first big project since her long-running talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, came to an end in June 2022, just two years after staffers accused her of creating a “toxic work environment.”

As anticipated, the controversy is a major topic in For Your Approval. In the hour-long set, DeGeneres discusses being supposedly “kicked out of show business” and refutes accusations that she was “mean” to her staff. Yet, she also reflects that she “was a very immature boss” because she “didn’t want to be a boss” and is now “happy” that she is no longer in that position.

Ahead of the release of For Your Approval, the 66-year-old embarked on her Ellen’s Last Stand… Up tour, telling an audience during a post-performance Q&A in July that the special was her final gig. “This is the last time you’re going to see me,” she said. “After my Netflix special, I’m done.”

She starred in the television sitcoms Ellen (1994–1998) and The Ellen Show (2001–2002). She also hosted the syndicated television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003–2022), for which she received 33 Daytime Emmy Awards.

DeGeneres' stand-up comedy career started in the early 1980s and included a 1986 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. As a film actress, she starred in Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999), and voiced Dory in the Disney/Pixar animated films Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016). In 2010, she served as a judge on the ninth season of the Fox competition show American Idol.

DeGeneres has won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, 20 People's Choice Awards (more than any other person), and numerous other awards for her work and charitable efforts. Early Life[]

Ellen DeGeneres was born on January 26th, 1958 in Metairie Louisiana. She is the daughter of Elliot Everette DeGeneres who was an insurance agent and mom, Elizabeth Jane who was a speech therapist. Ellen has one brother, Vance DeGeneres who is a musician and producer. When Ellen was a teenager her parents divorced. Years after her parents separation, her mother remarried and moved to Atlanta Texas , while her brother moved with his dad who stayed in Louisiana [2] [5].

Ellen ended up graduating from Atlanta High School in 1976 and moved back to New Orleans to attend college at the University of New Orleans. She majored in communications studies and later decided to not continue her education and worked at various other jobs like clerical, and J.C Penney [5].

Stand Up- Comedy[]

When Ellen was 23 she started doing stand up comedy. In 1986 she started on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. During her visit during the Tonight Show, Johnny Carson asked her to sit and his famous "couch." The only female comedian to ever to do. Ellen also made appearances on the The Late Show of David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Oprah Winfrey show, Later with Greg Kinnear and Larry King Live[2].

Coming Out[]

Ellen DeGeneres came out during The Oprah Winfrey show in 1997. At the same time, her character on her hit show Ellen, Ellen Morgan came out as gay in the episode called "The Puppy Episode." in which 4.2 million people tuned in. Yet J.C Penney and Chrysler pulled out as her endorsement[1]. The show received a lot of criticism after the episode aired. As the show continued to air, views began to decrease and after it's fifth season, Ellen was cancelled in 1998.
