Wonderful, Absurdist Comedy

Ladies, this one is for you. Some of you may have suspected it all along, but this film confirms God is a chauvinist pig (well, the clues were all there, come to think of it). Luckily - but unbeknownst to most - God also has a daughter, and she's had enough of her mean-spirited, bad-tempered Father and is about to teach Him a lesson.

With the help of her brother (yes, THAT brother) and a somewhat unorthodox band of newly appointed disciples, she's determined to make her own mark on the universe. Needless to say, God's having none of it and tries to do everything in His - considerable - power to stop His rebellious daughter from undoing everything He's worked so hard for.

This hilarious satire is a firework of inspired ideas and just a blast from start to finish. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves intelligent, absurdist comedy in the vein of 'Life of Brian' or 'South Park' and doesn't get easily offended. 8 stars out of 10.

Mythological Masterpiece

This movie evokes the mythological dream-state that movies like Amélie, Big Fish and the Fifth Element represent as well. It has many layers of meaning and holds a great tension between desperation and hope, comedy and drama. It quotes other masterpieces and in doing so, adds value. It is a typical European movie, like Amélie and the Fifth Element are. It is intellectual, cynical and absurdest in a way that can easily be understood as blasphemy, irrationality or confrontational. In Amsterdam the audience applauded after the screening and I will see this movie many times, just to be able to switch between awe and analysis. The actors are well casted. Benoît Poelvoorde has a field day as the narrow- minded, unhappy patriarchal god, the revolting daughter by Pili Groyne is

(Not to be mistaken for Jaco Van Dormael's eponymous award-winning movie (1996) starring Daniel Auteuil)

Marcel Hanoun has never taken the easy way .His more accessible work ,"Une Simple Histoire" ,a MTV effort -which was released in the theaters as well- told the story of a poor woman ,lost in Paris with her daughter,in a very austere way, without any touch of melodrama .

The same goes for "Le Huitième Jour" :the newspaper which could have led the movie into melodrama territory is only a way to help the heroine make up her mind.

The key to the movie is in Chartres where Françoise visits her folks ;after a walk with her mom (a cast against type Lucienne Bogaert) in a bleak street of a provincial town,Françoise takes one of her dolls out of her wardrobe ,put it on the windowsill and says "look" to the toy.

Françoise is an introverted lonely woman, a little self-centered and even selfish employee nearing thirty (Hanoun uses much voice over to depict her frames of mind).During the week ,she lives a monotonous life ,in spite of her neighbor's efforts ,a widower,to overcome her firm independence of men .The eighth day is Sunday :she opens up ,she's beaming ,in the only sequence filmed in color .

  • Mr. Nobody (film)

2009 science fiction drama film directed by Jaco Van Dormael

Mr. Nobody is a 2009 science fiction drama film written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael. An international co-production between Belgium, France, Germany, and Canada, it marks Van Dormael's first English-language feature. The film stars Jared Leto as Nemo Nobody, the last mortal on Earth after humanity has achieved quasi-immortality. As a 118-year-old man reflecting on his life, Nemo recounts alternate versions of his past, exploring the impact of key decisions through a nonlinear narrative that incorporates the multiverse hypothesis. The ensemble cast also includes Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger, Linh Dan Pham, Rhys Ifans, Natasha Little, Toby Regbo, and Juno Temple.

Van Dormael began developing Mr. Nobody in 2001, spending years crafting a screenplay that combined speculative science, experimental cinema, and motifs of human emotion. Filming took place from June to September 2007 across Belgium, Germany, and Canada, with cinematographer Christophe Beaucarne using 35mm film. This was followed by an extensive post-production process, including visual effects, which took a year and a half to complete. The film marked the final collaboration with composer Pierre Van Dormael, the director's brother, who died shortly after completing the score.

Mr. Nobody premiered on 12 September 2009 at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Osella. Following creative differences with studio executives, the film's release strategy was revised, leading to a limited theatrical run beginning in Belgium and France on 13 January 2010, before expanding to streaming and home video in international markets. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its screenplay, visual style, musical score, and cast performances, although its narrative structure sparked some debate. It won the André Cavens Award from the Belgian Film Critics Association and was nomin
