Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto; May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He performed jazz, pop, rock and roll, folk, swing, and country music.
Darin started his career as a songwriter for Connie Francis. In 1958, Darin co-wrote and recorded his first million-selling single, "Splish Splash", which was followed by Darin's own song "Dream Lover", then his covers of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea", which brought him worldwide fame. In 1962, Darin won a Golden Globe Award for his first film, Come September, co-starring his first wife, actress Sandra Dee.
During the 1960s, Darin became more politically active and worked on Robert F. Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles at the time of Robert Kennedy's assassination in June 1968. That same year, Darin discovered the woman who had raised him was his grandmother, not his mother as he thought, and learned that the woman he thought was his sister was actually his mother. Those events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.
Although Darin made a successful comeback (in television) in the early 1970s, his health was beginning to fail due to a 1958 single by Bobby Darin "Splish Splash" is a 1958 noveltyrock song performed and co-written by Bobby Darin. It was written with DJ Murray the K (Murray Kaufman), who bet that Darin could not write a song that began with the words, "Splish splash, I was takin' a bath", as suggested by Murray's mother, Jean Kaufman. The song was credited to Darin and "Jean Murray" (a combination of their names) to avoid any hint of payola. It was Darin's first hit and the song helped to give him a major boost in his career, reaching No. 3 on the U.S. pop singles chart, No. 2 on the R&B Best Sellers chart, and No. 3 in Canada. "Splish Splash" was Darin's only entry on the C&W Best Sellers in Stores chart, where it peaked at No. 14. In a 1967 interview, Darin claimed that he was so happy about having his first hit that his skin condition cleared up. Splish Splash was recorded in a session at New York's Atlantic Studios on the evening of April 10, 1958. The personnel on the original recording included Jesse Powell on tenor sax,Al Caiola, Billy Mure on guitar, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Panama Francis on drums. The lyrics mention several characters from other songs of the period, including "Lollipop", "Peggy Sue", and "Good Golly Miss Molly". However, in an interview, former classmate Jerrold Atlas claimed that "Miss Molly" referred to Molly Epstein, Darin's former English teacher at the Bronx High School of Science. "She taught him to use the language in staccato notes: short fast, words...She was very fond of Bobby. Bobby told me she sharpened his respect for language". British comedian Charlie Drake scored a top ten hit with a comedy version of the song in 1958, produced by future Beatles producer George Martin on the Parlophone label. The song was re After graduating from The Bronx High School of Science and attending Hunter College for one year, Darin started out, first as a demo writer then as a demo singer at the legendary Brill Building in New York City, along with future stars Connie Francis and Don Kirshner. In 1957, he recorded for Decca, but found fame at ATCO Records in 1958, with his first hit records "Splish Splash" and "Dream Lover," both of which he composed. Late in 1958, Bobby Darin recorded the album That's All, an LP of standards, upon the suggestion of his publicist and friend Harriet Wasser. This LP contained his signature song "Mack the Knife," which won the 1959 "Record of the Year" and Darin the "Best New Artist" Grammy. "Mack the Knife" was number one on the Billboard charts for nine weeks in 1959 and is one of the biggest selling records in history. Bobby Darin was the first young singer to bridge the single record and album gap between the teenage and adult buying public. Darin appeared in Las Vegas with his close friend Mr.George Burns in 1959, and began an exciting nightclub career. Managed by Steve Blauner, Darin, at the young age of 23, performed at many major night clubs in the country, such as The Flamingo, The Sands and The Hilton in Las Vegas, the Cloister in Los Angeles and the Copacabana in New York. Bobby not only sang, but did impressions and played several instruments in his concerts. He was popular with adults and teenagers alike at the clubs, breaking attendance records and performing .Splish Splash (song)

Legendary entertainer Bobby Darin had a wide range of talent. Born Walden Robert Cassotto on May 14th, 1936, Darin rose from poor beginnings in Harlem and the South Bronx. He also fought rheumatic fever as a child, which damaged his heart and plagued him throughout his life. As a result of these obstacles, he worked extremely hard to overcome them. Knowing his life would not be a long one, his ambition to succeed was fueled by an overwhelming desire to make it big in show business.
