Twenty years ago this month we went to Namibia on holiday, and one of the reasons we wanted to go was to learn more about Fred Green, Val’s great great grandfather, who was a trader and elephant hunter there for about 25 years, from about 1850 until his death in 1876.
Frederick Thomas Green (1829-1876) Born Montreal, Quebec. Died Heikhamkab, near Walvis Bay
We’ve been scanning some old photos, including photos of that holiday trip, and so it seemed a good time to share them and some of the related family history, old and new. Val had been to Namibia a year before, about a week after it became independent, and spent some time in the archives looking up the history of the Green family, and meeting some relatives and other researchers, like Dag Henrichsen, from Switzerland, who was particularly interested in Fred Green’s eldest daughter, Ada Maria Green, known as Kaera. Val also met a cousin, a descendant of Kaera, Mburumba Kerina, who is credited with the invention of the name Namibia.
In April 1991, however we all went, driving via Upington and the Augrabies Falls on Bright Monday, spending a night in Karasburg, and reaching Windhoek the next day. It was the first time I had been back to Namibia since being deported nearly twenty years before. It was interesting to see how things had changed in twenty years, and especially since independence. Some friends in Windhoek said that the biggest change had taken place overnight — the moment that the South African army withdrew to south of the border the whole country breathed a sign of relief and peace descended. There were several new buildings in Windhoek, which seemed somehow brighter and more cheerful.
We went north to stay ar Gross Barmen, and from there visited Okahandja, Omaruru and Otjimbingwe, places that Fred Green knew well 130 years before. You can read more about Fred Green’s life and times here and here.

Abstract
Bright Monday. Leave for Namibia. Vi A Talk By Roger Webster 2006 British TV series or programme Wild at Heart is a British television drama series created by Ashley Pharoah about a veterinary surgeon and his family, who emigrate from Bristol to South Africa, where they attempt to rehabilitate a game reserve for wild animals and establish a veterinary surgery and animal hospital. The show was broadcast on ITV for seven series beginning on 29 January 2006 and ending on 30 December 2012. Wild at Heart began airing 29 January 2006 on ITV. It ran for seven series, concluding 30 December 2012 with a two-hour finale. It was filmed on location at the Glen Afric Country Lodge, a 1500-acre game reserve and sanctuary that is home to a host of African wildlife, including lions, giraffes, elephants and cheetahs. Glen Afric is located in Broederstroom, North West Province, South Africa. A large set called 'Leopards Den' was built on the property specifically for the production. Producer Ann Harrison-Baxter said: "We literally walked every inch of the reserve to find the best place to build the house, and then it was all created from scratch and aged to look like it had been there for more than a century in just 10 weeks!" Leopards Den was significant as a symbolic character in its own right throughout the show's seven years. It served as the backdrop against which the family struggled to carve out a new life for themselves, and ultimately to survive and remain together. The primary cast included Stephen Tompkinson as Danny Trevanion; Amanda Holden as Danny's wife Sarah; Lucy-Jo Hudson as Danny's daughter Rosie; Deon Stewardson as the Trevanions' business partner Anders DuPlessis ('Dup'); Hayley Mills as Sarah's mother Caroline; Luke Ward-Wilkinson as Danny's stepson Evan; Rafaella Hutchinson as Danny's step-daughter Olivia (seasons 1-3); Olivia Scott-Taylor as Danny's step-daughter Olivia (seasons 5-7); Nomsa Xaba as Nomsa, cook and housekeeper at Leopards Den; Tha ‹ The template below (BLP IMDb refimprove) is being considered for deletion. One of the things that very easily happens to all of us during this thing called life, and I suppose more easily to historians, is that we not only get bogged down in the drudgery, the crime, the corruption and the increased rage of every day life, but we also tend to become stuck in the past and completely forget that tomorrow's history is actually being written today.
I have just had the privilege of spending the weekend in the magnificent little hamlet of Aberdeen which is some 50km South of Graaff-Reinet. A dusty nonplussed little town with no critical mass to speak of. Very little reason for its existence actually.
The little hamlet is in reality, an absolute gem. It is one of the best preserved Karoo towns with over 200 houses that date back to before 1890. About half of these houses have flat roofs with parapets and has been declared an architectural conservation town with its Victorian baronial ostrich style dwellings as well as Karoo, German, Gothic Revival, Russian and Flemish Revival styles. Let me tell you something of its history.
In 1675, Simon van der Stel ordered an exploratory trek from the Cape under Ensign Schrijver. This was in response to messages received from the Hottentot tribe called the Inqua-Quena under Chief Heykon who wished to barter with them for cattle and sheep. Upon arrival in the area, they were asked to wait until Chief Heykon and 150 of his men arrived from the Chief's Royal Kraal and successfully bartered some 1000 head of cattle and 300 sheep. The next incidence that is recorded some years later, is when the Inqua-Quena were violently robbed of 2000 cattle and 2500 sheep.
Slowly but surely as the frontiers were pushed further and further into central Southern Africa, so the settlers arrived and the today farmers took root in the area and eventually a church was built in 1855 on the farm Brakfontein to service the the local farming community. Plots around the church were eventually auctioned off a Wild at Heart (British TV series)
