Who Was Satyendra Nath Bose?
Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose discovered what became known as bosons and went on to work with Albert Einstein to define one of two basic classes of subatomic particles. Much of the credit for discovering the boson, or "God particle," was given to British physicist Peter Higgs, much to the chagrin of the Indian government and people.
Early Life and Education
Physicist Satyendra Nath Bose was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, on January 1, , the eldest and only male of seven children. Bose was a brainiac early on. He passed the entrance exam to the Hindu School, one of India's oldest schools, with flying colors and stood fifth in the order of merit. From there, Bose attended Presidency College, where he took an intermediate science course and studied with renowned scientists Jagadish Chandra Bose and Prafulla Chandra Ray.
Bose received a Bachelor of Science in mixed mathematics in from Presidency College and a Master of Science in the same subject in from Calcutta University. He received such high scores on the exams for each degree that not only was he in first standing but, for the latter, he even created a new record in the annals of the University of Calcutta, which has yet to be surpassed. Fellow student Meghnad Saha, who would later work with Bose, came in second standing.
Between his two degrees, Bose married Usha Devi at age After completing his master's degree, Bose became a research scholar at the University of Calcutta in , and began his studies on the theory of relativity. He also set up new departments and laboratories there to teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
Research and Teaching Career
While studying at the University of Calcutta, Bose also served as a lecturer in the physics department. The article on ‘Planck’s Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta’ was sent to Albert Einstein who translated it into German language and sent it for publication to a famous German periodical which ultimately gave birth to famous Bose-Einstein theory. In the year , Bose went to Paris and conducted research in the laboratory of Madam Curie. Next year he went to Berlin to join Einstein to work with him. Satyendranath Bose joined Dacca University again on as professor and Head of the Department of Physics and served there for nearly twenty-five years. In he was appointed as Khaina Professor of Physics in Calcutta University. He retired from Calcutta University in University honored him by re-appointing him as Emeritus Professor. Later he became Vice Chancellor of Viswa Bharati University. In the year , he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, London. Biography
Satyendranath Bose's mother, Amodini Devi, had received little formal education but she skilfully brought up her large family of seven children. Bose's father was Surendranath Bose who worked for a while as an accountant before joining the East Indian Railways. He later set up his own chemical and pharmaceutical company. Satyendranath was the eldest of Amodini and Surendranath's seven children, having six younger sisters.
Satyendranath began his education at an elementary school in Calcutta before entering the Hindu School in It was here that his interest in mathematics and science began, and as is so often the case, it was due to an outstanding mathematics teacher coupled with encouragement from the headmaster.
He began his studies at Presidency College, Calcutta, in where he had a brilliant academic record. He was awarded a in and an in proving himself to be by far the best student of mathematics. In the year he was awarded his Master's degree, Bose married Ushabala Ghosh. They had five children, three daughters and two sons.
Had Indians been allowed to take administrative posts in the government service, Bose would almost certainly have followed that route. As it was, he continued to study physics and mathematics and was appointed to the newly opened University College of Science in Calcutta in This university was a research institution for postgraduate studies and here Bose was able to study recent European texts on quantum theory and relativity which, before the opening of the new institution, had not been readily available in India. Gibbs book on statistical mechanics stimulated Bose's interest in this topic. He also studied Einstein's papers on relativity and obtained Einstein's permission to translate them for publication in India.
