It’s certainly not a horror film, nor is quite a thriller. It’s not a drama, nor is it truly a mystery. “Shutter Island,” the latest film from Academy Award Winning Director Martin Scorsese, is really best described as a long walk, or a 138 minute run time, for a short drink of water, or in Shutter’s case, a simple and less than satisfying ending.

Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a U.S. Marshall who has been appointed to investigate the escape of a patient from a mental hospital for the criminally insane. With the hospital located on a small island and surrounded by miles of cold Atlantic water and rock bluffs, she is presumed to be hiding or dead. But as Daniels digs deeper into the case, he finds more secrets and perhaps more truth about the island and himself than he ever wanted to find.

Considering its pedigree, “Shutter…” was fairly dissatisfying. Coming from a director as talented as Scorsese, one expects a little more. The elements were all there: the camera angles, the stylized dark noir-esque scenes, and, of course, DiCaprio as the lead. But there were many elements that missed the mark. The musical score was overly dramatic, as violins pounded and shrieked relentlessly during calm car rides and walks through the hospital grounds. Dialogue was confusing in places, almost nonsensical and humorous in others, and Mark Ruffalo was, as usual, underwhelming in his supporting role, adding little to the on screen chemistry as DiCaprio’s partner throughout the ordeal.

The film’s biggest downfall is that it was simply too long for the message it had. Muddled in Scorsese’s ramblings and story telling, the whole ordeal felt like stumbling down an all too familiar psychological path en route to a bogged down dénouement. The conclusion which we’re presented as an audience is simply not enough to justify sitting for more than two hours, and exacts a “that’s it?” response from those who have been waiting attentively for a shocker ending that no

    Shutter Island

    June 25, 2022
I probably belong to the minority who knew neither the book nor the Scorsese film adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio, because I was envied several times in my status messages for being able to enjoy the story for the first time. What should I write? Obviously you all know the story of U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels, who is supposed to solve a case in a psychiatric clinic on the island off Boston.

The confusing plot that builds up over the four days on the island, only to be resolved in a gigantic plot twist at the end, is insanely well written and brilliantly constructed. One of the best thrillers I've ever read. Absolute madness, in the truest sense of the word. What you can do with language, how you as a reader have for ideas about the events, how you anticipate things that were never written so and how suddenly your own thought construct begins to waver, but you as a reader hold on to it, want to hold on to it, do not want to admit it, how the plot turns and how you leave the scene at the end completely disturbed again. The Hammer.

Was soll ich groß schreiben?

    Shutter Island (film)

    2010 film by Martin Scorsese

Shutter Island is a 2010 American neo-noirpsychological thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is adapted by Laeta Kalogridis from the 2003 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, about a Deputy U.S. Marshal who comes to Shutter Island to investigate a psychiatric facility after one of the patients goes missing. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, with Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow and Michelle Williams in supporting roles.

The film had its wide release on February 19, 2010 and received generally positive reviews from critics. It was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2010, and grossed $295 million worldwide. The film is also noted for its soundtrack, which prominently used classical music, such as that of Gustav Mahler, Krzysztof Penderecki, György Ligeti, John Cage, Ingram Marshall, and Max Richter.

    Plot

In 1954, U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule travel to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on the inhospitable Shutter Island, Boston Harbor, to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando, a patient of the hospital who had previously drowned her three children.

The staff, led by psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley and his colleague Dr. Jerimiah Naehring, appear uncooperative. The marshals learn that Dr. Lester Sheehan, who was treating Solando, had left the island on vacation immediately after Solando disappeared. Teddy experiences migraine headaches, flashbacks of his experiences as a U.S. Army soldier during the liberation of Dachau, and also vivid dreams of his wife Dolores, who was killed in a fire set by arsonist Andrew Laeddis. Teddy explains to Chuck that he took the case to find Laeddis, believing he is on the island. Solando suddenly resurfaces and believes Teddy is her husband. Teddy later breaks into the restricted Ward C to find Laeddis, where he meets patient George Noyce who
