James L. Mack was a conductor, composer, producer and arranger who worked on more than 60 albums for artists including Nancy Wilson, Jerry Butler and Tyrone Davis, while also serving for more than 30 years as chairman of the music department at Harold Washington College.
“Mack was one of the few musicians in the world who was at home in front of a symphony orchestra, a jazz big band, an R&B group,” said jazzman Ramsey Lewis, who made several albums with Mr. Mack. “There was no genre of music, other than maybe hip-hop and rap, that James Mack was not comfortable with.”
Mr. Mack, 76, of Oak Park died Sunday, Aug. 6, in Athens, Greece, after suffering a pulmonary embolism in his hotel while on vacation. He was with his wife and daughter, Heather, said his wife, Sheila A. von Wiese.
Mr. Mack worked as an arranger and producer for labels including Brunswick, Chess, Capitol and Columbia. Equally adept in classical music, he was a guest conductor for orchestras including the Chicago and Grant Park Symphonies, and often used classical musicians in his jazz and pop arrangements.
His collaborations with Lewis included 1988’s “Classic Encounter,” which was recorded in London with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
“If someone said we needed strings or we needed a horn section, it was `Call James Mack,’ ” Lewis said. “It was like `Call 007.’ “
Chicago jazz singer Bobbi Wilsyn, whose first album “Got to Get You Into My Life” was produced by Mr. Mack, said he was “just a sweetheart” to work with.
“He had a wonderful attitude, a great personality and was always very complimentary,” Wilsyn said.
At Harold Washington College, formerly Loop College, Mr. Mack brought his real-world experience to the classroom, said George M. Williams, a fellow teacher. Mr. Mack earlier taught at Crane Junior College, now Malcolm X College, said another former colleague, Maur James Mack is a Professor of Chemistry. After completing his Bachlor’s degree at Middlebury College in 1995 he went to graduate school at the University of New Hampshire where he conducted his doctoral research under the supervision of Glen P. Miller working in the area of fullerenes. After earning his doctoral degree in 2000, he was a postdoctoral fellow with Lawrence T. Scott developing a bench top synthesis of fullerenes and nanotubes. Since joining the faculty at the University of Cincinnati in 2003, Professor Mack has been interested in the development of environmentally benign organic reactions and the synthesis of novel organic materials. bachelor of arts: Middlebury College Middlebury Vermont, 1995 (Chemistry) Doctor of Philosophy: University New Hampshire Durham, New Hampshire, 2000 (Chemistry) Grant: #CHE-0548150 Investigators:James Mack 2006 -2011 National Science Foundation CAREER: Utilization of Mechanochemistry for solvent waste prevention Role:PI 550000 Active Type:Grant Level:National Investigators:James Mack 2005 University Research Council “Shaken not stirred: Utilization of mechanochemistry for solvent prevention” Role:PI 5000 Active Type:Grant Level:University 2004 Green Chemistry Gordon Conference Travel Grant Grant: #041064767 Investigators:James Mack 10-01-2011 -09-30-2015 National Science Foundation Developing a better understanding of organic reactions under solvent-free ball milling conditions Role:PI 367835 Active Type:Grant Level:National Investigators:Michael Gonalez, James Mack 2011 -2011 American Chemical Society Developing and Assessing Sustainable Pharmaceutical Reactions in a Continuous Flow Environment Role:Co-PI 100000 Denied Type:Grant Level:National Grant: #1154468 Investigators:James Mack, Joanna Mitro, Margaret Hanson, Ilya Vilinsky, Kenneth Petren, Jodi Shann, Stephan Pelikan 2011 -2016 NSF Using retention strategies and academic support to build a first ge We’re sorry, this site is currently experiencing technical difficulties.
