Recently honored by a samba school in Rio de Janeiro carnival, Romero Britto is one of the most international promenint  Brazilian  painter alive. He claims to have created his works to invoke the spirit of hope and a feeling of coziness. His works are called by collectors and admirers as the “art of healing.”

His serigraphs are very compared by critics to the work of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, which mixes some stylistic tics typical graphic art of comics and pop art. However, I believe that his art has less originality and expression than these two artists.

His style has conquered the rich population of Miami what made the artist to change his studio to this town where a lot of his works like big installations are placed all over. Also,  famous people love to be immortalized in his serigraphs, for example, the current president of Brazil, Dilma Roussef and Madonna as well.

I particularly like the use of colors of his style, but I do not like the way he developed then because today he has become a international mark where his graphic serigraphs stamp every kind of object, even pet bowls are signed by him ,and for me, these objects are of a questionable taste different from his serigraphs.

Growing up in Recife, Britto spent time playing with his eight siblings. At a young age, he received a book that featured a number of paintings, and he felt himself drawn towards the bright colors and unique designs. When his older brother showed him other art books, he began painting images and canvases that recreated the work of the masters. Britto later went to college as a prelaw student and planned to attend law school after graduation. As he began focusing more on his art and less on his studies, he decided to quit school and devote himself to art. Britto displays some of his pieces and work created by up-and-coming artists at his Miami gallery, but he also shows his work at other galleries and museums. As a self-taught artist, Britto has no formal training. He never attended art school, preferring to grow as an artist as he gained inspiration from the people he saw and places he traveled. His talent caught the attention of Michel Roux, who hired the artist to work on an advertising campaign for Absolut Vodka. Britto also worked on advertising campaigns for Pepsi and other companies.Britto later moved to Miami, Florida, and began creating Pop Art pieces that often included recognizable figures. Mickey’s World shows the iconic animated character holding a large globe by his side. Some of his work, such as Everglades Green and Everglades Red, combined Pop Art with Cubism, but he also used mixed media or acrylic paint on canvas in many of his pieces, including Sitting Girl. After spending several years on painting and mixed-media creations, Britto tried his hand at sculpting. One of his pieces is now on display at Hyde Park, while another is in the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Despite starting out in the advertising field, he began showing his work in 1990. The CIAJG / José de Guimarães International Arts Centre (Guimarães, Portugal) presents Troubles with Primitivism—a view from Portugal an exhibition-essay curated by Mariana Pinto dos Santos and Marta Mestre, and designed by Sofia Gonçalves.

The ongoing exhibition’s public programme will culminate with the free-access conference Troubles with Primitivism—a view from Portugal, on September 28, bringing together invited speakers to build an ephemeral community of reflection and experience about the museum. The opening day featured the music and sound performance programme antimuseu, promoted by Revolve, with artists as Croatian Amor, Vanity Productions, Oqboqbo, among others. 

A comprehensive, richly illustrated catalogue will be published in early November 2024. The authors include Cristina Roldão + José Augusto Pereira + Pedro Varela, Egídia Souto e Philippe Charlier, Joana Cunha Leal, José Neves, Margarida Cafede Moura, Mariana Pinto dos Santos, Maria Cardeira da Silva, Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Marta Mestre, Nuno Porto, Rita Chaves, Tiago Saraiva, Vera Marques Alves, Wladimir Brito, Vera Mantero.

Through meticulous research in Portuguese archives and collections, Troubles with Primitivism—A View from Portugalpresents a renewed perspective on “primitivism” and the inherent contradictions of this historical and cultural process. This innovative, research-based and experimental curatorial proposal invites the entire museum to engage in a critical dialogue, amplifying a polyphony of voices from diverse sources, authors, and artists.
