Harvey Spencer Stephens (born 12 November 1970) is an English former actor. He played the role of devil child Damien Thorn in the 1976 film The Omen, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture – Male.

Biography

Stephens was born in Putney, London and was educated at Malory Comprehensive School (currently Haberdashers' Knights Academy), Bromley. He was four years old when picked for the part, which required him to have his blond hair dyed dark brown. In an interview with AMC, director Richard Donner said Stephens got the part after attacking the filmmaker (at Donner's urging), punching Donner in the testicles for good measure.

It was the only major film role in Stephens' career; he would later play a small role in the 1980 TV filmGauguin the Savage. He also appears in the DVD special features section of the 2006 version of The Omen, and has a bit part as a tabloid journalist in the film. Interview footage of Stephens from 1996 was used in the 2005 documentaryThe Curse of the Omen, a programme detailing the supposed eerie coincidences surrounding the making of the film.

Stephens appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius Radio on 23 April 2008 to promote a film he was working on. He said he also has started appearing at autograph signings and horror conventions "with my tricycle”.

Who is Harvey Spencer Stephens?

Harvey Spencer Stephens was born on November 12, 1970.

At just five years old he was chosen to play Damien Thorn in The Omen - launching him to worldwide fame.

He landed the infamous part after punching director Richard Donner in the testicles.

In the film he played the antichrist child who attacked his parents, and killed off other characters by suicide or murder.

But it was a short-lived acting career, with The Omen being his only major film role - despite briefly returned to The Omen in a 2006 DVD special features section to play a tabloid journalist.

The 52-year-old is now a married dad-of-one who had recently been working at his own security firm which went into liquidation in 2016.

He is now working as a property developer.

In a 2007 interview with Stephens, he was quoted saying: "It was good, but I was only five, a lot of it went over my head. It wasn't a big deal. It was good while it lasted.

"I did a film in Paris with David Carradine called In Search of Eden. After that, I was 10 or 11, I went to normal school, left school, went and got a job in the city.

"Acting wasn't something I really had my heart set on."

Legend has it, five-year-old boy Harvey Spencer Stephens won the role of original problem child Damien in ‘The Omen’ when he punched Richard Donner in the balls – at the director’s behest, we should add. The role would go on to define Harvey’s life: as sweetly sinister Antichrist-in-short-trousers Damien, Stephens became the poster child for an entire generation of horror fans – fans who still line up round the block to meet him today.

The Putney-born lad decided the acting game wasn’t really for him and was too young at the time to truly appreciate what a unique position Donner and 'The Omen’’s producers had put him in. After the role of Damien was recast for sequel 'Omen II: Damien’ in 1978, Stephens’ only other screen role of note came four years after his debut in 'Gauguin The Savage’, a David Carradine movie about tempestuous French painter Paul Gauguin, in which young Harvey played the relatively small part of 'Young Emil’. After that, it was goodbye Hollywood, hello normal life.

Harvey tried his hand at many things as an adult (he’s pictured above in 2005) – he worked in a video store, ran a limo company and is currently a property developer and futures trader. Harvey Stephens (August 21, 1901 – December 22, 1986) was an American actor, known initially for his performances in Broadway productions, and thereafter for his work in film and on television. He was most active in film beginning in the 1930s and through the mid-1940s. Beginning in the mid-1950s, he transitioned to television and enjoyed success there through the 1960s.

Stephens was also an avid competitive glider pilot. He was inducted into the Soaring Hall of Fame in 1966 for his contributions to the sport.

Early years

Stephens was born in Los Angeles. As a student at the University of California at Los Angeles, he earned letters in basketball and football. Before he turned to acting, Stephens worked in western copper mines and Mexican oil fields in addition to working around the world on a freighter.

Stage

Stephens' debut in the theater came in 1920 at the Pilgrimage Play in Hemet, California. Following that, he toured for two years in a troupe headed by Walter Hampden and worked in stock theater companies in several cities.

On Broadway, Stephens appeared as Sam Worthing in Other Men's Wives, written by Walter C. Hackett, late in 1929. He also appeared as Richard Wadsworth in Dishonored Lady (1930); as Gail Redman in Tomorrow and Tomorrow (1931); as Joe Fisk in The Animal Kingdom (1932); Fred Barton in Best Years (1932); Bruce Blakely in The Party's Over (1933); and John Palmer in Conquest (1933). He also appeared in South Pacific as Commander Harbison, alongside Mary Martin; he was one of only two cast members who did not sing.

For the summer of 1931, Stephens was a member of the Summer stock cast at Elitch Theatre.
