  • Author Q&A: Author/Publisher Vivian Zabel, “Midnight Hours,” “Prairie Dog Cowboy”

Author/publisher Vivian Zabel has written in the adult, young adult, and children’s genres. She also has a publishing company—4RV Publishing—which has released nearly 30 books in the last two years. She writes under the name Vivian Gilbert Zabel for adult-level books, articles, and stories (Midnight Hours, Hidden Lies and Other Stories with Holly Jahangiri); she uses V. Gilbert Zabel for young adult and juvenile works (Prairie Dog Cowboy, The Case of the Missing Coach); and Granny Zabel for the children’s genre. As a publisher, Zabel offers the Write On! community a unique perspective and advice for writers in all areas.

    Why do you write?
I write because I have to, have no choice. The voices in my head will not allow me to keep from writing.

How do you approach the blank page?
Usually I already have a story in my mind that needs to be put on paper or computer. Of course, the characters make some changes at times, but for the most part, the plot and characters are already “alive” in my head.

How do you juggle so many different genres/age groups, as well as your publishing company?
I’ll have to confess that I mix up which hat I’m supposed to be wearing at times, but I have my own reading ideas, young adult grandchildren, and young grandchildren. I just switch from my reading level to what each of them would like. In fact one of my special acquisition editors is one of my young teen grandsons. If he likes it, then we want it.

I couldn’t manage all I do without help from our art director and her assistant (Aidana WillowRaven and Mandy Hedrick) and other staff members. Most are working with me to make this company fiscally secure. The future looks good.

I usually spend the early, early mornings doing my own writing. The rest of the morning is spent on emails and submissions. Th

The poem expresses that while the speaker enjoys declarations of love, living only in a fantasy world is not sustainable and reality is needed for true life. The speaker wants to experience love in the clear light of day-to-day reality rather than the blurred darkness of endless dreams and fantasies.

Since I was born on an Air Force base (Randolph AFB, Texas), right under the flight path, I knew I had to be a plane. I often wondered if I were a B52 or a C130. No one can imagine the surprise, the dismay, the shock I felt when my mother told me I was a person. I often wondered why I had people for parents.

One thing, before I continue - no, I did not watch the Wright brothers test their plane. I'm not that old.

Now, for some of the boring stuff. Born July 28,1943, I traveled all over the United States and half way around the world west and east. I started in Texas and graduated from high school in Limestone, Maine. I lived on Guam and in Morocco. As an 'Air Force brat,' I followed my father to most places the military assigned him.

I married my husband on February 18, 1962. After our three living children were in school, I returned to college and studied to become a teacher. I taught school for nearly 30 years, grades five through twelve, from time to time, but mainly high school. I taught English, speech, drama, debate, French, yearbook, newspaper, creative writing - I think that's all. Now I write poetry, stories, and books, as well as frantically learning the publishing trade.

When I'm not writing, I'm attending ball games or traveling. Thanks to three grown children, I have ten grandchildren, two great grandsons, and two great-granddaughters. Three of the grandchildren used to live in the same town I do, and all three boys play all kinds of ball (baseball, basketball, football, and we were able to attend most of their games. However, we don't get to since they moved away, and after this year, one will be in college. But their interest in sports is one reason some of my stories and books are about boys who play ball and have adventures.

Oklahoma, which means "Land of the Red People," has been my home for most of my life. I don't think I would ever want to live anywhere else. The state has sandy beaches around a large sal

We’re back in the coffeehouse with author Vivian Gilbert Zabel, author/co-author of three books, with three more coming soon, and CEO of her own publishing company, 4RV Publishing LLC. I "know" Viv from our long-term association on Writing.com and have followed her publishing adventures. I lured Viv away from work with the promise of her favorite coffeehouse drink and some interesting conversation.

Susan: Welcome Viv. At long last we get to chat. First, what’s your favorite drink? Coffee? Tea? Smoothie?

Vivian: Hot tea, a combination of Bigelow’s Constant Comment and Green Tea, hits the spot with a bit of Splenda mixed in.

Susan: How many published books have you authored/co-authored?

Vivian: To date, I’ve co-authored two books: "Hidden Lies and Other Stories" with Holly Jahangiri and "Walking the Earth: Life’s Perspectives in Poetry" with seven other poets. I authored "The Base Stealers Club," a book written for readers ages eight to about fifteen.

I write under a different name for each age group’s books. For adult level, I use Vivian Gilbert Zabel; for juvenile/young adult, V. Gilbert Zabel; and for children’s books, Granny Zabel, since my grandchildren and great-grandchildren labeled me Granny.

According to a review about "Hidden Lies and Other Stories," authors Vivian Gilbert Zabel and Holly Jahangiri present a varied array of short stories in their book. Both have a writing style her own, but each complement the other with crisp stories with action, vivid characters, and plots in the collection of twenty-one short stories.

"Walking the Earth" gives the perspectives of life from eight poets, each with his or her own blend of writing styles.

In "The Base Stealers Club," when a thief begins to clean out locker rooms, not of trash but of money while players are on the baseball diamond, members of the Jonesville Chargers decide to try to uncover the person stealing from ball players as well as help their team win a championship.
